Top 5 Essential Oils

There are hundreds of essential oils.  It can be overwhelming! I like to try and make things simple. So, I researched the top 30 most popular essential oils and narrowed the field down to 5. There are 31 different combinations possible with 5 essential oils, which is plenty for me.  The oils I chose are:

  • Safe - Not harmful to pets
  • Versatile - oils with a variety of uses that blend well with the others.
  • Sustainable - a yield over 1% (which is average), and not from plants whose populations are potentially threatened. 
  • Good for diffusing (my favorite method of use)

So, (drumroll please), here they are in no particular order:

Lavender (lavendula angustifolia)

This one was almost a given, as it's the most popular essential oil out there. The name is thought to be derived from the Latin lavare, meaning to wash, or livere meaning blueish.  Romans did use it for bathing and washing.  It's my go to oil for night time diffusing.  Five of it's many uses are:

  • Calming for mood and skin
  • Improves sleep
  • Boosts immune system
  • Pain control
  • Speeds healing of wounds

Lemon (citrus limonum)

We all know lemons. Lemonade is a favorite of mine. The essential oil is also a favorite. Although it's origins are unknown, it is thought to come from a region in northeast India before it was distributed widely throughout the world. The essential oil, derived from the peel, is know for:

  • Relieving nausea
  • Promoting weight loss
  • Elevating mood
  • Clearing nasal passages
  • Boosting the immune system

Peppermint (mentha piperita)

Peppermint is a hybrid of spearmint and water mint, both part of the Lamiaceae (or mint) family. It was first identified in England. The mint family is known throughout history. In Greek mythology the nymph Mentha was turned into a mint plant by the Pluto because he loved her and wanted others to be able to appreciate her forever. It is well known for it's cooling properties. It reminds me of Christmas. It also:

  • Improves focus
  • Relieves sinus and lung congestion
  • Energy boost
  • Relieves headaches
  • Relieves itching


Rosemary (rosmarinus officinalis)

Native to the Mediterranean, rosemary is an evergreen shrub that has been associated with memory for centuries. It's name comes from the Latin ros (dew) and marinus (sea) or" dew of the sea". I have always had a rosemary bush growing somewhere in my garden.  Rosemary potatoes are so tasty. It's essential oil benefits include:

  • Good for focus and attention
  • Stimulates hair growth
  • Reduces anxiety
  • Support immune system
  • Stabilizes blood pressure



Tea tree (melaleuca alternifolia

The Tea Tree was named by sailors, who made tea from the leaves of the tree growing on the southeast Australian coast. This one I didn't know much about before essential oils.  I chose it because it's well known for it's healing properties. Other uses include: 

  • Immune booster
  • Treats respiratory conditions
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Treats skin ailments
  • Anti-bacterial
